Basement Ideas When Renovating

Unfortunately most people do not have any idea how many different things you can do with the huge wasted area that most people have beneath their homes. The problem is that most basements are not constructed with the idea of using them for living spaces. If you want to convert your basement to a living space you will need to seal the walls and floor very well. Concrete is porous and will sweat water from the surrounding earth into the basement. When you seal the walls and floor and provide some temperature control and ventilation in these area however the problems will go away. All basement ideas start with preparing the room for habitation, instead of storage.

Once the walls and floor are sealed and prepared you need to consider some basement renovation ideas. This area can be used for everything from extra bedrooms, a large family room, home theater, and home gym, home bar, home office, and you can even install a sauna to go with the gym. The number of things you can do with this large space is nearly unlimited but you need to make sure that you have enough electrical outlets, plumbing fixtures, a very solid set of stairs with non slip stairway treads, and many other things.

Because there might be some structural changes needed to the area you need to hire a contractor to do the work because you will need building permits and major work like this should not be done by a DIYer. Using a contractor is more expensive by you will be getting a professional job and greatly extending, nearly doubling, the living space in your home. It pays to do the job right the first time. If all you need is a few extra plugs however the work can be done by you if you are familiar with electrical work. The same applies to most flooring options.
