Are thinking about remodeling your bathroom and trying to decide on what will work best for you? The good news is that a bathroom is very small and not that difficult of a project. You will need to remove the floor (if the floor is bad), vanity, sink, and the faucet. You may want to install new lighting over the vanity as well. How about the bathtub or shower? This is going to be a bigger job than all the aforementioned items. But it can be done. I would leave the bathtub if it's in good shape. You can install brand-new sliding glass doors and have it looking brand-new.
Ceramic Tiles
In all honesty, this is one of the easiest remodeling tasks to accomplish. It's almost child's play to lay tiles when everything except the bathtub is removed. As long as your sub-floor is in good condition, you will have the tiles installed in no time. Install new Hardy backer board if you are doing the bathroom on a wood sub-floor. The gives the tiles a better surface to stick to. Ceramic tile is still dirt cheap. You can purchase them for under a $1 per square foot. Don't be tempted to let the price of the tile be the deciding factor. You will not need more than 70 square feet of tile for the bathroom. I used granite tile and it cost less than $100 for all the material. Of all the bathroom flooring ideas that I have seen, I think ceramic tile gives you the most value and selection.
Bathroom Vanity, Sink, And Mirror
Nothing dresses up a bathroom as much as a new vanity and faucet. You can pick up new vanities in a box at The Home Depot, Lowes, or other home supply stores. They are on the pricey side for such a small item. Expect to pay over $500 when add a sink and faucet. If you go the DIY route for installation, you will save more than enough to justify this expense. Installing a new vanity is easier than laying tile. If you buy the quick connect faucet, the plumbing is a breeze too. A word of advice to all of you is to stick with American made faucets. It will last much longer than the inexpensive Chinese water fixtures.
Bamboo Flooring
If you have a lot of confidence, you may want to try bamboo flooring on the bathroom. Bamboo is a tropical plant that is resistant to high moisture areas. For those of you that have small children, you would need to evaluate this before you install the floor. Do some research on the pros and cons of stranded bamboo flooring and you may be surprised at how durable of a floor this is.
If you take the bathroom remodeling project step by step, it's not that difficult. Once you start, you are going to need to work fast as the bathroom gets frequent use. If you have several bathroom in your home, this will not be an issue.
