Finding different DIY projects to do around the home is a fun way to add some personality and customization to your house. If you're looking for something to fill a smaller dining room or kitchen space with, then consider putting together your own drop leaf dining table. It's easier than it may seem, even with the moving parts, and allows you to color it or design it however you want.
Part of the reason this is such an easy thing to put together is that there are a large number of kits you can buy with the wood already chosen, fashioned, and sanded down. This is a lot of work to do yourself, although if you have woodworking experience you may argue that this is where the most personality is in any table. Either way, you will start by buying either the kit you want to put together or the raw wood itself, and get that to your home. It may take several days to turn raw materials into wood that's ready to put together.
Usually with drop leaf tables you want to start by putting the hinges on, to make sure they work okay, before you try to put the legs on. Make sure the hinges on either side of the table are equidistant from each other and from the edges of the table itself. When you fasten them on try them out and make sure they work correctly.
Now you put the legs on. With a kit everything will be cut so you don't need to worry about making sure the balance is right, but either way, once they're in place set the table up and make sure it doesn't rock. If it looks good, you can glue them in and you have a table.
You can always buy a cheap drop leaf kitchen table to add to your home, but why not try putting one together? It's a great project for an afternoon and will result in something you can brag about to your friends.
