Exterior House Painting Tips and Ideas

Exterior house painting is what you make of it. You can tackle the big project on your own, or you can hire a professional company or contractor to help you take care of business. If you decide to enlist the help of your family and make this a do-it-yourself project, take these tips and tricks into consideration before you get started!

CertaPro Painters offer these basic guidelines to exterior house painting:

  • Wash your home first.
    • Go to your local equipment rental store and rent a power washer to prepare your home for the initial steps of painting. Pressure washing your home can be extremely dangerous so follow all instructions carefully and make sure you take care to stay safe.
  • Prep the surface.
    • Once the siding of your home is spic and span from the pressure washing, you have to ready the surface for the incoming paint. This means sanding down any rough areas, filling any holes or cracks, clearing away any leftover debris and taping off any necessary areas.
  • Apply the paint.
    • This is the fun part! Once you have thoroughly prepared your surface, prime the area with a primer of your choice (priming helps the paint stick to the wall better, among other things). Then start from the top and work your way down. This is generally the best practice for exterior house painting.
  • Clean up your mess!
    • The job isn’t over once the last stroke has been applied, far from it! Clean up your area and any trash left over. If you have to come back to your project because it’s not complete, make sure you clean off all of your brushes, rollers and equipment to keep them in tip top shape. To keep your paint fresh, try placing plastic wrap over the top and spray it with cooking spray before placing the lid back on. Once the lid is on just flip it upside down to create an airtight seal!
  • Inspect, inspect, inspect!
    • Once the paint has dried, go over your work with a fine-toothed brush (pun intended!) for any spots you may have missed or an area that needs a small touch up. The minute details won’t be minute forever. Fixing them early will save you headaches in the long run.

Exterior house painting is a big project, however you choose to look at it. If you think that it may be too much to tackle on your own, give the professionals at CertaPro Painters a call today.
