Tips for the DIY Handyman

by admin on January 11, 2012 · 0 comments

Love doing DIY? Making small improvements here and there around the home is a great hobby and can make a real difference to your living space at a greatly reduced cost. However, (much as you might hate to admit it) some jobs are simply too big or unsafe to take on as a novice. This article explores some of the repairs you can make yourself and some that are better left to a professional.

Odd jobs around the home such as putting up shelves and bookcases or replacing a tap, can safely be taken on by anyone with the correct tools and knowledge – get a decent DIY manual to help you get started. Anything which involves skilled labor - complicated plumbing, electricity, heavy work or work that has safety implications such as large construction projects – is better handed over to someone who has the training to do the work properly.

If you are taking on work which involves heavy lifting, for example, then make sure you know how to lift properly, without causing yourself injury. If you are not confident that you can tackle the task safely then it might be time to call in the professionals.

If you really are looking to save money over the long run then remember that making a mistake by taking on too much can prove very costly in the long run – the dripping pipe could become a full blown leak and not only will you need to call a plumber but replace the flooring too.

Some projects are too specialized to be taken on by a beginner with a DIY manual to hand so be honest about your abilities and the safety risks involved. If you only tackle jobs which are suited to your abilities then you can save a great deal of money, and have a lot of fun while doing so!
