DIY Chalkboard Paint – Turn Your Closet Doors Into A Creative Canvas For Your Child

by admin on July 20, 2011 · 2 comments

One of the most versatile paint applications that can be added to a child's room design is Chalkboard paint. Chalk paint is simply a basic latex paint mixed with ceramic particles to give it that chalkboard finish and functionality. Chalkboard paint can be applied just like any other basic paint and will adhere to any surface that your standard paint will adhere to. With that vast type of versatility the ideas for chalkboard paint are virtually endless. Your project and design ideas can be as basic as painting a picture frame to as complex as painting a chalkboard wall or even an entire room.

One of the coolest and most simple chalkboard paint projects that I enjoy adding to a child's room design is to turn their closet doors into a virtual canvas. It gives your child a continuous place to express their creativity. Chalkboard paint will allow them to have a fresh canvas at any time with a quick swipe of a simple chalkboard eraser.  Here are some useful project tips for painting your closet doors with chalkboard paint:

  • First, before painting your doors make sure you sand any type of imperfections with a light grit sandpaper and also patch any holes with light weight spackling. Note: If the closet doors you are painting have a textured finish that texture will show through the chalkboard paint.
  • To get a high quality chalkboard paint application I recommend applying a minimum of 3 coats of chalkboard paint.
  • Read the manufactures suggested drying times and allow each coat of paint to dry completely before applying the next coat.
  • Last but certainly not least allow your chalkboard paint to fully cure a minimum of 5 to 7 days before using.

Painting your child's closet doors with chalkboard paint is just one of many different ideas you can do using this fun product. However, if you are just not into painting a chalkboard in your child's room design there are companies that make some cool chalkboard wall decals. Chalkboard wall decals are a simple peel and stick application that can be almost as entertaining as a chalkboard wall and can be moved or removed at any time. Help inspire your children's creativity with the many cool chalkboard application available today. Have fun and as always, Happy Painting.

You can actually have a lot of fun with this. In 2012 I painted black chalkboard paint over a red wall in the shape of the top of Mickey Mouses ears and the top of his head. They were at an angle so it looked like a giant mouse head was coming out of the floor. Like any paint, you can make whatever shapes you want, it doesn’t have to be square….and boring…Frog Tape delicate services is the best to prevent bleed though.
