For the last fifteen years, paint has been the choice of homeowners when it comes to covering their walls. Home builders found out that is was a lot cheaper and more hassle free to not use wallpaper and the trend has continued up till now.

It would seem from all the latest interior design blogs that good ol' wallpaper is making a resurgence and many individuals are starting to see that the old way of covering their walls was the best way.

While wallpaper has been the underdog to paint for many years, today, there are many reasons why a person who is remodeling their home should choose wallpaper.

It Can Drastically Change Your Room's Appearance

Every room has a specific purpose and wallpaper can accentuate your room to create a variety of effects. Ask yourself, what do you want to accomplish in a room? What type of feel do you want the room to have? Wallpaper can change the look and feel of any given room.

It can be used to brighten a dark room, accentuate the room's best features, create a cozy atmosphere or add character to a dull room. Various patterns can also be used to create optical illusions, which are invaluable in a room that is too long, too boxy or has low ceilings in order to create a more proportionate appearance.

Wallpaper is Cost-Effective

Painting and repainting a surface every couple of years can become expensive. Today, there are many wallpapers on the market that have a lifetime of ten to fifteen years. While the initial investment is more than painting, in the longrun, you will see the savings. Many wallpapers can be cleaned with warm water and a gentle sponging--a definite plus when it comes to running a busy family.

Wallpaper Adds Value to Your Home

Wallpaper can be used to flaws in your walls that paint cannot. It also protects your walls from the damage that can come as a result of kids. You can also use it to neutralize the interior of your house to fit anyone's style. If you have a certain theme that you want to center your house around, there is probably a wallpaper out there to match that them.

Wallpaper Creates Detail

If you live in a house with no personality, use wallpaper to give your home an air of character with one of the many varieties of patterns. You can accentuate objects in your home that you want to draw attention to or create a focal-point wall using a strong pattern. With a host of coordinating patterns, you can use wallpaper to create a design theme that you can build around. Wallpaper designers are always looking at new styles and create wallpaper designs to compliment them, giving the homeowner the freedom to choose from a wide variety of wallpaper patterns to fit your modern house.

As a painting contractor I have seen an increase in wallpaper requests which I prefer over faux finish techniques and that has to do with changes over time. Today’s wall coverings are mostly vinyl and they are easier to remove if you want to change your interiors in the future, where as faux finishes usually leave a texture on the wall that requires skim coating to cover. I don’t actually hang wallpaper personally but I do remove it. Most painters will remove wallpaper but if you want to hire a professional to hang it correctly, I would suggest calling your local retail paint and wallpaper providers and see who they recommend.
